We Need Leaders Who ...
2. ... work for the benefit of others and not just for their own personal gain.
The idea of moving up in a good company while focusing on our own personal gain is next to impossible. We can never get what we want without giving people what they want.
Whether it's customers, workers, managers or suppliers, we need to learn to focus on giving people what they want first. If we develop that discipline, we'll position ourselves for unlimited growth and reaching whatever goal we've set for ourselves.
Personal gain can never be attained if it is focused on. It may seem counterintuitive, but it's true. The more we focus on ourselves the less we'll get to where we want to go.
Mary Kay lived to help her consultants reach their goals. When she helped them reach their goals, she reached her goals. She didn't even think of creating the company to achieve her own goals, but rather created it to help other woman achieve theirs, and be rewarded highly for it.
In all my life, I've never seen somebody fail that looks out for the benefit of others. The only time it's happened is when they aren't willing to stick around long enough to see it through.
A business leader by definition should be those that don't look out for themselves. I said it's a discipline earlier because it's human nature to look out for No. 1. If we can escape that and look at how we can serve and help others, we'll be a success no matter what we do.
We just need to stick in the game long enough to be rewarded.
