The one thing needed to get your people to buy into a project.
This particular idea is so simple and easy that it can be neglected as to the power contained in it as far as buying into a project or plan goes.
If there is an idea that seems to be really good and a diretion within the company that you want to take, the best way to get your people on board is to involve them in the planning stage before decisions are made. If we make a decision before a project is implemented, our people will only think of themselves as a rubber stamp committee recruited to only reinforce your idea.
But if we tell them what we're thinking and from there solicit their input, they become the owners of the project or plan in their hearts and minds.
As a matter of fact, if we do it right, the original idea or thought may go through many phases and changes once our people get hold of it and may look completely different than what we originally had in mind. That's the way it should be.
When we do this with our people, not only does it give them ownership in what we're doing, but it will go further by encouraging them to come up with their own ideas and let them float through their coworkers minds to see what happens with it.
The mistake usually made with this is the timing of when an idea is presented to our people. Present it with the process in motion and they'll feel your offer isn't genuine. They've got to be involved in the process from the beginning for it to be an effective motivator and create the type of ownership that makes any good idea work.
