Mary Kay Ash: She Never Wavered - 54

"Praise them frequently and in public."

While we all know that praise is important for all our people, we need to go beyond doing privately alone, and bringing it into the eye of the public.

Having said that, I do think it's important to privately do it by managers so workers know you personally appreciate what they do, it's just that we need to go beyond that to bring praise of the exploits of our people to all their fellow workers we can.

This is especially important when it comes to things we want reinforced within the company. When people get attention, there is always the inclusion of what caused Mary_Kay%20praised%20workers%20publically.jpgthat attention in the backs of their minds.

What happens, is other people start to take up those activities and actions as fellow workers are recognized for the way they performed the specific thing that caused the praise.

These are things we should encourage managers and people to communicate about all the time. We should be continually looking for heroes in the things that really matter to a company and its success, and always give recognition for the way those actions were performed.

We're obviously talking about something that's done with excellence and effect. We don't want to praise mediocrity and make it too common. It needs to be something of excellence that really made a difference or went above and beyond the norm.

There should be a continual search for these types of actions in a company that can become a part of its legend and lore. Those coming up in the ranks love the idea of becoming part of that part company history.

When we give praise to our people publically, we're in essence becoming storytellers of what we want, where we want to go and what will be rewarded. It's the telling and retelling of those stories that will not only motivate and encourage our people, but will reinforce in a way that it becomes part of their very way of living within the company.

Praise and rewards create stories, and telling those stories create legend and lore within a company. Those legends becomes the stuff of what makes up a company. It all starts with praising what needs to be reinforced.
