Mary Kay Ash wanted to be the next sales queen.
Before Mary Kay had an idea of creating a business, she worked for another direct sales company. At a convention where there was an annual crowning of a 'sales queen,' Ash was fascinated with the idea.
She told the president of the company that she wanted to become the next sales queen. She said, “He took my hand in both of his, looked me square in the eye and after a moment said, ‘Somehow I think you will.’ Those five words changed my life.”
There aren't a lot of people that can succeed in life without the encouragement of others. While it can't be depended on, the right encouragement at the right times will change the life of a person, as Mary Kay confirms.
The idea is we need to be looking at opportunities and chances like that with our people. When we interject at key times in a workers professional life the right words and encouragement, they could lead to great things within the company that we have no way of knowing what they'll be.
There can never be enough legitimate praise from anybody in a leadership position in business. What seems like just a nice thing to do or treat someone, in reality is far more important than that. Who knows if the praise we give someone today will be the seed of an idea in them tomorrow that determines the successful future of a business?
If you think that sounds too dramatic, it isn't. I've talked to a lot of people through the years who've felt they weren't appreciated in a business, and have held back key information and ideas that could have made a huge difference in the business.
The reason they always say is why should they do something to help a company that doesn't care about them. I don't remember the response being different in tone from anybody I've ever heard this type of talk from.
It's not just good to treat people with appreciation, it's vital to a business. The one thing we must understand is it has to be real. Encouragement for something that is average or mediocre does nothing to truly encourage a person. It can also cause resentment in other workers who perform excellently.
We must look for excellence and performance that brings the standards of the company to higher levels. When a job is well done, it needs to be taken notice of and appreciated - privately and publicly. It could be the difference between success and failure for the future of your business.
