"A company is only as good as the people it keeps."
When thinking about Mary Kay's comment, it has a lot of undertones that need to be understood.
There's a supposition included with her comment in that we have to know what type of people it is we need to keep. She's not saying keeping people is what makes the company good, it's having the wisdom to know which people to keep that will determine the type of company we will have.
This is why it's so important to have our purpose, vision, business culture and operations set up in a way that draws out the best that our people have to offer.
Every business should be set up in a way that attracts the certain type of person we want to have work for and with us. Keeping the right type of people will mostly depend upon those things, far more than compensation and pay.
Mary Kay was meticulous when she started her business in working with this because in the beginning she wasn't thinking about starting a business, but in writing a book. When she went over the outline for her book, she discovered she had made the plans for the perfect type of business she would want to work for and in.
From there she built the business. The business was built upon a certain type of woman she had in mind, and she drew them to the company in droves because she remained true to what she stood for and wanted.
Not only that, but she retained her "consultants" because she built the business around the type of people she wanted to work with. No wonder they stayed faithfully working with the company for years.
