The beginning part of this last video in the series talks about how Pagan manages a virtual office, with his people all over the country. The second part translates management to a brick and mortar environment.
In the first part, he talks on our perceptions within a physical environment can be clouded by what seems to be a tremendous amount of work being done by what seems to be a bunch of activity swirling around us. Calling it creative distraction and avoidance, it can created an illusion that isn't really there.
So whether it's a virtual or physical office, there is really only one metric that we should use, and that's results! You can't fake or avoid results. They're either there or they aren't. So whether in a physical or virtual office, results, not looking busy is what is the determining factor.
What Pagan does in his company is have self-organizing teams. As people get to know what each other does well, there will emerge out of the group leaders that people respect. He only has teams and team leaders in his business; nothing else.
The team leader is their to offer assistance and keep the vision and goal in the minds of the team. There will be two team leaders on all projects.
He also makes a statement that I've believed for years, and really like hearing someone else talk about also, and that is that leadership isn't connected to educational levels or job experience.
The underlying thing looked for when hiring people is whether they're results oriented or not.
When considering people we hire, we need to think of them as potential future leaders in the company. From the beginning of the process till the end, we need to look for that in those working in the business. The most results oriented will be the best leaders. They'll have the passion to do what it takes to get things done, not simply themselves, but in gathering together whatever people and resources they need to do to get it.
