I found some videos by Eben Pagan that give some great insights into hiring and building great teams. Of course hiring right in the first place is the most important step in building a great work force.
In the first video, which I include below, he first gets into the idea of job descriptions. The major problem with a job descriptions, as he puts it, is it locks people into a box where they don't go beyond it. So if other things within a business need to get done, they will say it isn't in their responsibility to help out.
He encourages rather to help people find out who they are within the business environment itself. In a sense, he's telling them to discover and create their own job description based on their unique skills, interests and passions. That way it'll be more real to them.
Another major thing he looks for when hiring people is that they're self managers; people who are willing and able to prioritize and accomplish the tasks they engage with.
What people that are self starters need is vision, not being baby sat all day long. By vision he's talking about a compelling picture of the future that will inspire, motivate and excite them.
So at the beginning stage of the of the hiring process, there's already a definite type of person that's being looked for. When we look past job descriptions and set schedules, we're in reality eliminating a lot of people from the labor pool we are searching in. That's a great thing to do. We need to be that specific.
One thing to keep in mind about this, simply copying this isn't necessarily the best thing to do. But taking into account the principles behind it and adapting them to our unique businesses is definitely something we need to do.
With that in mind, here's the first video in the series:
