We're living the Next Big Thing.
Grove actually made these comments years ago, and it's still true to this day. As industries get impacted by the information age and technological changes, the "next big thing" happens all around us.
We do have to take the phrase "next big thing" and put it into context though. Even when these things seemingly swirl all around us, it shouldn't take us off our core purpose and vision. Those that get caught up into that, trying to continually adapt their purpose to those changes, will find themselves losing the heart and soul of who they are.
With that in mind, we're still in the early stages of what's really happening in the business world today as far as information and technology go.
As Grove also says, "It's a little like living in the time when electricity was in its early stages. It took decades for electricity to change the landscape. We're in the early stages of recasting our commercial lives, our professional lives, our health practices, everything."
He's right. Even now there are probably far too many people attempting to define exactly what's happening. Definition and to much understanding can bog us down into relaxing too much and congratulating ourselves on our progress.
Even though these changes have been going on for quite a while now, it's still too early to make assertions that may not hold for very long.
with the many disruptions across numerous industries, we still don't know what those eventual outcomes will work out as in the practical sense. Everything's still a moving target; we can't afford to settle down in any way.
Any time we're living in the midst of huge, disruptive, continuous change, all we can do is hold on to our purpose while trying out different things to see what will work for our specific business the best.
We must be careful not to try to define too clearly what's going on, for what we think may be clear, may only be a temporary holding pattern until a bigger picture grows in our minds.
It is way too early to be able to define things as of yet. All we can do is hold tightly to our vision and purpose while looking at new information that helps guide us along the next part of the path as it relates to that vision and purpose.
What inevitably happens in any type of change like this is people start writing their books and giving their take on what is going on. That can be helpful in general, but we need to carefully sift through the data and writing to only embrace that which makes sense to our businesses.
We're still in the middle somewhere of this revolution, we need to loosely hold everything but our purpose while we go forward. Definitions won't be able to be made for quite some time yet. Action also precedes explanations.
