... no longer Bill Gates.
The relatively unknown Mexican tycoon Carlos Slim (You gotta love that name) has surged into the lead as the richest man in the world; not only overtaking Bill Gates, but exploding past him by $8 billion, according to the Mexican online financial publication Sentido Común.
For those following this, it's not a total surprise, as last April it was thought that Slim had taken over the No. 1 spot, although relegated to the No. 2 position by Forbes in the world rankings.
The vast majority of Slims' wealth is from his shares in his America Movil group (mobile phone company), which increased by a hefty 27 percent during the second quarter. He also has a strong banking company in Inbursa, which also jumped in value by 20 percent. He now has an estimated wealth of $67.8 billion, in contrast to Bill Gates' $58.2 billion.
His holdings equate to an amazing 8 percent of the entire Mexican gross domestic product.
