The Jack Welch Management Mystique - 60

Welch's 21 Steps to Management Greatness - 7

Facing Reality

These two words are included with some of the simple concepts that are vastly underrated by business leaders. Some even surround themselves with people who say "yes" to everything and so hide the truth of where things really stand at the time. This is a fatal mistake to any business.

Facing reality is so vital, that if it isn't done, everything else after it will fall apart because it's based upon how we wished things were, rather than how they really Jack%20Welch%20and%20facing%20reality.jpgare.

Welch goes on to say that "Most mistakes that leaders make arise from not being willing to face reality..." That's a powerful, provacative statement. Look at any great business leader and you'll find the quality of looking at things as they are on the top of their business practices.

If this is true, and it is, why then do so many business leaders enter into this world of illusion? Welch says, "Facing reality often means saying and doing things that are not popular, but only by coming to grips with reality would things get better."

We can't be business leaders if we don't have a reality check on a consistent basis. How can you lead if you don't even know what the situation is? The answer is we can't!

While facing reality can be initially overwhelming and sometimes painful, once it's done, than the business of taking action can started.

We must know the core realities going on to make plans that will effectively deal with the challenges facing us. To not know what they are is the height of folly in business leadership.

Take a reality check and then take action. It's the only way we can really do business successfully.
