Having Fun is More Important than you Think
“When all else fails, put on a costume and sing a silly song. Then make everybody else sing with you ... All of this is more important, and more fun, than you think.“
A business culture needs to have some type of fun element within it. I think that any business that takes itself too seriously will have a lot of burnout, and will also struggle with keeping good workers and providing great service.
There is something hard to measure in doing silly, funny things in front of or with our people that does more than we can imagine.
It can ease pressure, celebrate victories, snub our noses at temporary setbacks, spread across the company, keep us in friendly modes most the time, make leaders more human, open communication, among a host of other things.
What's great about it is it's not expensive, as far as money goes, but the payback is so beyond most things we can do, that it's just worth making consistent efforts to have it be part of the company culture.
It's not that it always has to be related to productions either. There are always a lot of people in a company that are willing to do goofy things just for the attention, and it always loosens people up and takes the edge off of them as they go about their daily tasks.
Even the most productive worker that loves what they do needs this type of activity to lift them up.
It has to begin at the top though. Someone in upper leadership needs to take the initiative to do this, or encourage others to. Contrary to what many people may think, Walton was considered an everyday guy, and was a lot of fun to be around. His workers loved him for it and responded by building Wal-Mart into the great company it is.
