The Common Sense Management of Sam Walton - 104

One of Walton's Secrets to Increasing Productivity

One of the things we need to understand in business, is everything we do needs to be thought in terms of increasing productivity. Walton had these motives with Wal-Mart for sure.

This isn't bad in any way, shape or form. Everything we do has to be with productivity and results in mind. This of course doesn't mean that other benefits won't come along with it.

Sam%20Walton%20was%20always%20having%20fun.jpgThis is why Walton always tried to make working at Wal-Mart fun. He wanted his workers to enjoy what they were doing - and they do.

“It's sort of a 'whistle while you work' philosophy, and we not only have a heck of a good time with it, we work better because of it,” said Walton.

Another interesting reason Walton said he loved to have fun, was the way competitors would think that they weren't serious about competing and providing a good product and service for their customers.

When you look at the other people we cover on managersrealm, you see this as a pattern with them too. Herb Kelleher and Richard Branson were always thought of as somewhat rogues and simpletons, while at the same time competing ferociously in their markets.

Walton self-consciously did this to make people think of him and Wal-Mart as being not serious contenders. It worked beautifully for him, as when they finally started taking notice of him, he had surrounded their markets with Wal-Mart stores and was poised to invade their key territories. Wal-Mart is still invading to this day, based upon being looked on as country bumpkins.

By the way, it's one of the reasons the elites are behind the campaign against Wal-Mart in the guise of worker concern. They hate that this type of style has destroyed their business models, and so resort to using the press they control to continue their attacks on the company because they aren't able to run their operations near as efficiently as Wal-Mart.

So fun has the great value of making employees happy, increase productivity and make you underestimated by your competitors until it's too late for them to do anything about it. Walton was a master at this.
