The Common Sense Management of Sam Walton - 103

“Celebrate your success. Find some humor in your failures.” But, above all, “show enthusiasm – always.”

If someone in business leadership or management doesn't understand their will be ups and downs throughout their tenure at a company, they are in for a rude awakening. It comes with the territory - bar none.

Having said that, Walton could have easily given up when he had built his first store that was very successful and yet was refused a lease. Part of it was his problem for not having an option to renew, but at the same time the owner of the property didn't treat him right either, by not allowing him to keep working the property. Not too many years later the owner of that property had to go out of business as Walton came back to town.

The point is that Walton knew how to live his life in a way that he didn't take things too seriously. He didn't mind doing funny and humorous things to keep things light in the stores, while he was still keenly focused on accomplishing his vision.

Sam%20Walton%20was%20always%20enthusiastic.jpgWalton knew what type of future he wanted as it related to Wal-Mart (WMT), but he didn't let it bother him or cause him worry.

It was because he was able to take this light approach to business that he was able to get through all the hard issues that challenged him throughout his professional life.

He always looked for the positive no matter how hard the circumstances became. It worked astoundingly well for him as he was able to expand that attitude to those he touched in the company.

We can read all the endless amounts of literature on how to handle tough times, in the end, humor and lightheartedness are one of the best ways to limit the otherwise crushing impact that some business problems can cause.

Walton just wouldn't allow circumstances to rule his attitude, and he did always show enthusiasm whether he was in a low time or celebrating a victory. It helped him and Wal-Mart to stay on an even keel.
