Continuing Coverage of the Dow Jones Story
An example of my post yesterday about "What the Real Battle over Dow Jones is About," is shown in the comments Paul Krugman makes in a select New York Times (NYT) article (subscription).
He says that if News Corp. (NWS-A) and Rupert Murdoch buy the Wall Street Journal "it will be a dark day for America's news media -- and American democracy."
If it wasn't so funny it would have to be taken serious. Now it's no longer "editorial independence" at stake, it's the entire American democracy that will crumble if Dow Jones is bought by Murdoch.
Why are people like Krugman and the New York Times starting to panic? No more than I mentioned in the last post: the battle for who sets the news agenda for the nation.
What is interesting is to see that the attacks on Murdoch simply confirm that the Times, and other news organizations like them, have been doing this for years, and they know that the tables have been turning on them and may completely turn over if Murdoch gets the Wall Street Journal and Dow Jones.
The "editorial integrity" thing is directly connected to this reality, which is why the battle has been so strong, and the latest propaganda from the Times and others picking up steam.
When it comes down to it, whether Murdoch gets the Journal or not won't stop it. If the deal doesn't go through, all it will do is slow it down. The trend has been going on for years and it won't stop. The Times is only trying to keep the business from collapsing fast and it's weakness to be exposed even more.
It is fun to see them squirming and ranting in fear from the possibilities that lie ahead.
