Continuing Coverage of the Dow Jones Story
People close to the negotiations say that Dow Jones & Co. (DJ) board and News Corp. (NWS-A) have come to an agreement in principle on how the editorial board of The Wall Street Journal will be constituted.
The general, overall pieces of the agreement are in place, while a few smaller issues are being worked out.
Details of the final deal haven't been released or told, but this has been the obvious key to moving ahead with the rest of the negotiations. The only wait left will be the agreement being brought to the Bancroft family for approval or rejection. If that's decided in the affirmative, it won't be very long before the deal comes together.
The key motivator for News Corp. in this is of course their upcoming cable business channel, which could mine the Journal and the other Dow Jones properties for a ton of content that has a trusted brand already built into it. It's instant credibility.
An interesting aside to all this is the deafening silence of early rumors that billionaire Ron Burkle was going to work in conjunction with the Independent Association of Publishers' Employees union to make an offer for the company. Nothing has been heard from them since the early days the story broke.
