US lawmakers are set to unveil a law this week that is created to respond to the value of the Chinese yuan. Some US government officials say that the Chinese are keeping it undervalued. Chinese officials said they'll respond if the law is put into effect, which would result in tariffs that would be as high as 20 percent on all Chinese imported goods.
Responding to a statement by the Senate finance committee which said, "Fundamentally misaligned currencies distort global markets and put US manufacturers and farmers at a competitive disadvantage," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang said, "Is the yuan high or low? The US Congress says it is high, but whose standard is this? It is the US standard?"
There is nothing new in this particular struggle. When Mexico was starting to offer good in the US years ago, the same old protectionism garbage came out. This smells of union influence. If it's not Juan, it's yuan.
It's like the government is trying to operate as if we were still a predominately
manufacturing economy. It doesn't make sense.
When it comes down to it, if something like this stupid legislation were to pass, the only one it would really hurt would be lower wage-earning Americans, who've voted with their dollars that they want the less expensive Chinese goods.
Is the US government now going to increase tariffs on Chinese goods? All they'd be doing would be putting a tariff on the American low and middle class wage earners, who rely on and want the low prices.
The lame argument that this is going to hurt American farmers and manufacturers is a joke. The major farming output in America is done by huge corporations now. It's not like some small farmer on a 150-acre farm is suddenly going to be put out of business by the Chinese yuan.
I think a lot of this is union motivated, because in many cases they've priced themselves out of the global market. They seem to be the ones that need to be overhauled, or better yet, gotten rid of altogether.
American consumers don't need to underwrite outrageous union demands ... while their way of life decreases, while the union wages and benefits increase.
