When considering if Republican candidate for President of the United States, Ron Paul, would be good for business, I want to focus on one small, but important part of the picture: his opposition to federal interference in the market process.
I remember in an interview one time where Herb Kelleher said in response to a question about whether it was easier to go into business now as it used to be. His answer was that it was much harder than it used to be because of the enormous cost related to regulatory changes.
He said: "Well, when I started practicing law, maybe 5% of a law firm's business was dealing with the government [and the rest with clients]. Today, it's only 50% or 60% on behalf of clients."
In this one extremely crucial area, Ron Paul would be an excellent candidate on behalf of business. While every time you hear about some negative thing talked about in the press about business, you then have a bunch of politicians jumping on the emotion of that time to use it for an excuse to create more regulations without regard to their long-term impact.
Of course the position by Paul is referring to more than simply regulating everything, he's also talking about the use of government by certain big businesses to give them a competitive edge over their competition.
To me the more government gets involved with something it knows nothing about, the worse they make it. With the opposition by Paul to government interference in the free market, he offers an important alternative to a political mindset that doesn't understand the impact of what it's doing.
Business needs to be able operate without government interference in the market. We need a new breed of politicians that understand the importance of that, and Ron Paul is one of those new breed.
