“A public-opinion poll is no substitute for thought.”
The idea of public-opinion polls being a part of the business leadership landscape doesn't bode well to me.
What that means is people are starting to bring politics into the business realm; a huge mistake that we must battle as hard as we can.
When I say that people are bringing politics into business, I mean by that some are starting to run businesses based upon polls rather than feedback and great customer service.
There are a whole host of special interest groups that are starting to treat businesses like politicians. They think businesses owe them something and they'll make them pay if they don't get on board. Polls have always been one of the suspect tools they use to weasel their way in.
Unfortunately, many businesses are giving in and jumping on bandwagons that have absolutely nothing to do with them, is way outside their expertise and in a number of cases represent spurious undertakings to say the least.
Polls and surveys have a very limited use for businesses. They are manipulation tools in many cases to pressure companies to do something they may not want to. We need to resist them and be extremely careful on what we align ourselves with.
Just because some people are able to manipulate the media and use the Internet to shout loud, doesn't necessarily mean that they have any basis in reality, or are really representing the general population.
We do need to be thinkers and searchers of facts no matter what we do in our businesses. To listen and respond to demagogues is setting us on a course of no return, where you can be shaken down for almost every cause that loudmouths consider important.
