“There seems to be some perverse human characteristic that likes to make easy things difficult.”
We talk about the vital importance of simplicity all the time at managersrealm, and here again we find ourselves with Warren Buffett trying to get through to us again on its extreme importance also.
While it may be important to someone to go to dinner parties and social functions and be congratulated on how great they've done, and how nobody can figure out why because it's so complicated and only the very few can reach their level. The reality is that it may be an ego booster, but for great managers and business owners it is much different.
When Buffett talks about a "perverse human characteristic" above, he's in reality just talking about pride and the ego of people. If someone can make it look like they're special, it gives them a personal boost. But as far as managing and running a business go, complexity is irrelevant and detrimental to success.
For some reason people feel more important if they believe they've conquered some complex formula or problem, which then enhances their personal worth.
We need to fight this tendency and focus on simple solutions to problems rather than complex ones. The vast majority, if not all problems, are simply finding a practical solution to something that arises from everyday interactions in business. Nothing more.
Look for simple solutions and answers to what is challenging you at the time. You'll find that when you look for them that they can be found. Resist the magnet of complexity that wants to rear its head when challenges arise. The answers aren't as difficult to discover as we may think.
