“If you love your work, you’ll be out there every day trying to do it the best you possibly can, and pretty soon everybody around will catch the passion from you – like a fever.”
The first thing I thought of when I read that comment by Walton was that as usual he was ahead of his times. Today in the Interner world, the world viral is thrown around in a way that Walton understood long before there even was an Internet.
It is true, especially with management, when you have a genuine passion for what you're doing, it will be caught by others. It's just a law that works over and over again. But it can't be considered a strategy or technique; it must be real.
In an area of business that would be considered mundane by most, Walton was able to transfer, like all great managers, his passion for the business category he served.
Business managers that are able to embed that type of passion into their people, plant something within them that carries on for years after they leave the seen, or even life.
Walton was able to do that with his people as people still think in terms of how Sam would do it if he were here. It's quite a powerful legacy that people try to get into your mind far past your time on this earth.
That's the type of passion and genuinity that give impetus to a business that can carry it on for years. Wal-Mart (WMT) has that working for it to this day. It all came from the "cause" that Walton considered himself working for.
