“We’re all working together; that’s the secret.”
When talking about something that seems so obvious above, it's tempting to dismiss it as a slogan that you hear everyone repeat. And in some cases you would be right. Many managers and companies use this mantra or something similar to it to rally their troops.
There's something much more fundamental than simple sloganeering here that bears looking at.
To get a people to work together doesn't seem like a secret. Every business has their people working together - right? Wrong!
The secret is it isn't referring to people that congregate in the same physical place and perform their assigned tasks. That's not what working together means.
What it's referring to is an all-encompassing vision and purpose that makes people know that they're working for something bigger than themselves. It's something that is like a glue that holds everyone together no matter what their specific part in the vision is. All the great companies have this.
Today people are starting to call it a "cause." It's the feeling that you're doing and working on something that is really making a difference. The secret is having such a vision and passionately communicating that vision in such a way that people adopt it as their own.
It is that which makes people work together as one. The driving force is a passionate vision and purpose that people want to make into a reality - and they do.
