"She learned early on the importance of practicing disciplined time management."
In another one of those habits that all successful business leaders employ, time management was one of the keys Mary Kay's success.
She knew, along with all people that have big goals, that the management of her time properly was the only way she would achieve what she set out to do.
In response to that reality, her practical step was simple but powerful. She made a list of what she called the “Six Most Important Things” to do, but she didn't stop there.
Then based upon that list, she would write down specific deadlines which she expected herself to complete them in.
She said, “Over the years, I’ve observed that nearly all high achievers know how to make good of those 1,440 minutes in each day.”
With Ash this didn't just stop with her professional goals, but she encouraged her people to learn how to do this across all the areas of life their lives intersected. To that end she advised them to define goals specifically and then prioritize their commitment to those goals.
It's another way of saying that she made a general map of her life and live that life out accordingly. Of course that isn't talking about regimentation, but of keeping things clear before you as you pursue your various interests.
Anybody that leads a busy life knows how quickly they can get off kilter and get off course. These were some of the tools she used to ensure it didn't happen.
