"Most people live and die with their music still unplayed. They never dare to try."
While this is a motivational quote and encouragement for people to be willing to take chances and try by Mary Kay, I want to bring it into the business management realm.
We need to ask ourselves a question as managers, and it's this: How can we create a business culture that encourages people to play their music?
The first thing we need to understand is that we've got a ton of untapped potential within our companies or divisions. To let it lie dormant and unused is a vast waste of resources.
Those who work within a company on a day-to-day basis are the ones that really know what is happening on the practical level. Many times they keep those things to themselves in a passive-aggressive mode because there's nothing in place to encourage and reward them for their input. We need to be totally committed to making sure that isn't the case in our areas of influence. There are very few things more important than that for a company.
One of the ways we can do this if for legitimate tries and attempt. Our people should know that we encourage them to try different things and then give feedback to us on how what they tried worked out. It may not work, but there is so much good will created with our people when we tell them it's a good try - whether it works or not - that it's worth the occasional failures.
If we create the culture and atmosphere where our people know they can play their music, they will reward us back many times over by bringing our company to a higher level. This is done by so few companies successfully, that it can immediately bring great competitive advantage when done successfully.
Encourage people to play their music and your business will become a symphony where everybody plays their part to the fullest. They'll love you for it, and so will your customers.
