Andy Grove: Only the Paranoid Survive - 4

"In the future, all companies will be Internet companies. I still believe that. More than ever, really."

What was telling about Grove's statement above is he said it while the dotcom crash was in effect.

The reason he was able to make that type of statement at the time was he understood the difference between what he called the "Internet economy" and what some people were trying to pass off as a "new economy." He like the first description better, as he considered it more accurate.

The idea he was trying to get across was that all companies would have an Internet strategy of some sort; that's what he called the "Internet economy."

What he viewed as the "Internet industry," the disgraced dotcom failures, was what he considered the usual hyped-up nonsense that accompanies all new areas of business that are introduced.

In the turmoil of massive change, you always get those that either don't know what they're talking about, or deliberately lie to try to make what they have to offer as the crucial element of success. Grove would have none of that.

Even today, right at this moment, there are still all sorts of things that are being worked out and experimented with on the Internet that are in no way ready to be declared the future of the industry.

Grove understood the importance the Internet would play for all business, but he also was keenly aware of the hucksters circling around like vultures, who were the negative side of the business.

What I like about all of this with Grove, is that he had a good handle on the power of the Internet and how it would impact the business world, while not throwing away everything out because of those that started to believe their own lies and deception.
