Business Results
The underlying reason Warren Buffett has given for not splitting Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) stock has been his desire for attracting rational, long-term investors ... those who who won't be attracted to the company based upon arbitrary actions like splitting the stock.
He writes, “We want those who think of themselves as business owners and invest in companies with the intention of staying a long time. And, we want those who keep their eyes focused on business results, not market prices.”
Buffett's simple but powerful way of saying things never ceases to amaze me. When you transfer these thoughts to business management, you get the simple, easy to understand concept of keeping our eyes on results. Strangely, in our day and time, many companies and supposed business leaders even think that looking for results is a negative.
What I like about looking at business results alone is that it cuts through all the garbage, excuses and rhetoric, to looking at things in their bare essence. Seeing if there are actual results makes whatever we're looking for easy to measure. Either goals were achieved or not. Did it happen or not?
If you go around reading the endless junk out there on management and how everyone seems to say they've got the next new way of doing things, just cut through it all and see if it will help to bring results. If it doesn't, don't waste your time with it.
Using results as a barometer is one sure way of eliminating the majority of junk floating around out there being peddled as business wisdom.
