Stay Lean and Fight Bureaucracy
When Sam Walton talks about keeping a company lean and fighting bureaucracy, he's talking in my estimation about two of the most important concepts business management needs to know.
From the standpoint of staying lean, there are two things to think of: Staying lean in debt and hiring, and also staying lean in layers of bureacracy and its effects.
With staying lean in debt and hiring, it offers two great advantage. For debt, it gives a company much more flexibility to respond in times when opportunities arise that may need to be responded to quickly with cash. It also helps a company during downturns when debt can literally destroy a company that's overloaded
with it.
For hiring, keeping lean there is a great advantage because it shows your people that you have a commitment to keep them long-term. To hire just enough people to run things is a show of faith that your people can do the job and you're interested in them personally being with the company for a long time.
For bureaucracy, that's always an obstacle to getting things done efficiently and quickly. To stay lean there is also to say to our people that they can get the job done without having to be watched over like children.
To get these two areas right is to already be ahead of the vast amount of competition we have. Don't be fooled though, it is a commitment and a battle that must be fought consistently with a view toward winning.
