Thinking Small Series - Part 4
In this section of the "Thinking Small" series, we'll take a look at the importance of pushing authority and responsibility down into the organization. Walton considered this crucial to the success of Wal-Mart (WMT).
There are two critical aspects to pushing authority and responsibility down deep into any business: the first is having the will to do it. If someone has immense ego problems, it will be difficult to employ, or even see the importance of doing this.
Second, there is the need to have a multifaceted way of communicating throughout the organization so people are continually reminded of the overall
purpose of the company, while focusing on the current ways of accomplishing that vision are being practically outworked.
People need to know they're in unison with what's going on company-wide. When that confidence is there, they will wholeheartedly give themselves to what needs to be done.
This is part of thinking small because we need to make people feel we're in a small business where you could simply walk up to them and give the feedback and response on how they're performing. Good people don't resent this, but welcome it.
When our people know they are on the same page as everyone else, it encourages them to move in responsible ways and with authority. It's the unknown and uncertainty that brings the fear within good employees that basically paralyzed them into inaction and in some cases lower performance.
The commitment to push responsibility and responsibility throughout a growing business is the same thing as saying we must have the will to open up our organizations and commit to as open communication as we are able to. Other than a few vital company secrets and strategies, everything that a business represents and knows should be continuously and constantly communicated throughout the organization. That's the real impetus behind the practicals of sharing power.
