"More than any other element, fun is the secret of Virgin's success."
We hear a lot of this from a number of business leaders concerning the key to their success.
I think one thing to talk about concerning "fun," is that it means different things to different people.
For example, Warren Buffett says that he tap-dances to work every morning, meaning that he loves what he does and doesn't really even consider it work. That's fun to Buffett.
Or consider Mary Kay Ash who was moved by the desire to help women become success with all aspects of their lives, not just financially. That was the motivating factor that for her would have been called "fun."
The point is that having fun doesn't mean that business leaders have to have a personality of a Richard Branson or Herb Kelleher. The personality of a person isn't what makes them successful, it's that they've tapped into their reason for being on this earth, and they flow with that purpose and have a lot of fun and enjoyment on their journey.
Fun can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but in the end I believe there needs to be an element of that in any business to make it a lasting success.
