You Never Know Where Obstacles Will Lead You
While many people can be crushed by the formidable obstacles that face them in business, others can face them and see amazing things happen. It's not an anomaly to see that those that stick with things through obstacles end up with all sorts of victories as they adapt and change to the circumstances.
It was really the driving force behind the initial success of Richard Branson. When he started Virgin Records, in 1971 Britain had a post-office workers strike which crippled the entire business as he was strictly a mail-order record business. With the strike, not only couldn't people send checks, but Virgin couldn't send records either.
Amazingly, what happened was it initiated the beginning of starting Virgin Shops.
They simply got a traffic count and decided to open a shop on the low-price part of Oxford Street.
A lot of people would call this luck or stumbling into success, but it's surprising how those that stick with something while they're willing to adapt can come across this type of luck and success all the time.
Not only are obstacles welcome news, many times they're crucial to taking the company to the next level. If you aren't in the game, how can there even be an obstacle? An obstacle shows that you're walking the right path, just maybe not in the right way or with the full picture.
Obstacles are sign posts telling you which direction you need to take next, it's only a matter of finding out what the sign is telling you.
It's those that respond successfully to obstacles that end up being winners; after all, that's what being entrepreneurs and managers is really all about. Don't look at obstacles as barriers, but as a sign post leading you to the direction you must take.
What kills these opportunities are stubborness and unwillingness to adapt, because there's an adoption some type of unwritten or written rule that keeps you from making the needed adjustments.
