The First Virgin Airlines Flight?
One time when Branson and his wife Joan were trying to catch a flight to Puerto Rico from Virgin Island/Beef Island, the local flights were cancelled so he had to call around and eventually was able to charter a plane for $2,000.
With an airport full of passengers that had no way of getting to where they wanted, Branson got hold of a blackboard and wrote down Virgin Airways, $39 single flight to Puerto Rico.
He walked around the airline terminal and in a short time had every seat on the charter plane filled for "Virgin Airlines."
In a humorous note that he revealed in his book, a passenger on the flight said after to Branson: "Virgin Airways isn't too bad. Smarten up the service a little, and you could be in business." Richard laughed "I might just do that."
You could say that this was the first Virgin Airlines flight. The point is that there is always a way to get around problems and solve them. Not only did Branson solve his own personal problem, but he also helped to solve the problems of the people that had no way of getting out of the terminal.
A simple story that tells the underlying reason for not only Branson's success, but the success of all those in business leadership and management. You simply find a need or problem and help people to solve it. Great managers and business leaders are able to see this where others don't.
