"An average person with average talents and ambition and average education, can outstrip the most brilliant genius in our society, if that person has clear, focused goals."
I like this quote above, not just for its encouragement to an individual, but to a company and its leadership as well.
Some people wonder at times how so many regular people and regular companies seem to do so great, while others that seem to get a lot of press and seem so sexy can be such underperformers. The answer, as Mary Kay says, is clear focus on our purpose.
Great managers know what the company represents, what their customers want, what their people need and how to give it to them.
How many times have you heard people talking about great companies and managers and hear them say that they could do the same thing if they wanted to - it's not that hard? And in truth they're probably right, as far as it not being that hard.
But in our age of communication, we need to be extra diligent to not be sidetracked by every new thing that comes down the pipe. One of the great disciplines of our age will increasingly be the ability to stay on course while the waves of change crash at our corporate boat demanding change for the sake of change alone.
If you know with clarity what the purpose of your business or division is, you're a step ahead of a lot of companies or divisions that assert they also know, but waver all over the place when they hear of another company doing something different. If something doesn't make sense to our businesses, we need to let it go. That's the underlying discipline that will keep us on the right track.
Do that and we'll have a lot less damage control on our hands than those that are tempted to get involved with everything regardless of the goals in front of them.
