"We must have a theme, a goal, a purpose in our lives. If you don’t know where you’re aiming, you don’t have a goal."
Many of us have probably heard the saying before that if you aim at nothing, you're sure to hit it. That's pretty much what Mary Kay was reminding us of here.
As managers especially, once we know we're made for it, we should definitely have something in site as the reason why we're doing it. Management isn't easy. It can take a lot out of anybody; even when you really enjoy it. The thing that gets you through is knowing why you're doing it.
It can be as simple as continuing providing a good life for your family, all the way to wanting to help someone through various charities ... so you strive for
excellence for the purpose of having the resources available to make it happen.
It's endless as to what you have as a goal or purpose, but for us, it must be a focused purpose that is part of our being. It's something that should be right at the surface of our consciousness daily as we go about our jobs. If we forget what's driving us, we forget why we're there, and then we falter in our excellence.
Excellence is driven by purpose, and without a highly motivating purpose behind what we do, the excellence we have known will start to diminish. If you're struggling with motivation, purpose and excellence, look to see if the purpose you started with is still there, and that you're still hungry for it to be accomplished.
To manage or lead without a goal will eventually be revealed as it's imperative to excellence in results that we have one. Mary Kay lived and breathed her goal and built a business empire around it. Cosmetics was simply the choice of products she chose to use to reach it.
