Kirk Kerkorian who made the offer to buy DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler unit for $4.5 billion this week, says that he's looking for a "a true partnership" with the various workers within the company.
"Today's statement reinforces Tracinda's intention to forge a partnership with Chrysler's management and employees in its offer to acquire Chrysler," said Winnie Lerner, an outside spokeswoman for Tracinda.
The underlying premise is that everyone involved will have to give up something to make it work.
Some of the specifics of the partnership would include bringing in "necessary new funds" to spend more on creating new products.
Another key ingredient will be the negotiating of a new contract with the United Auto Workers, which the offer is subject to. Also they want DaimlerChrysler to be willing to share in the liabilities of the unfunded pension plan, along with the health-care costs of retired workers. That could be a huge problem as it's a big reason why the company has lost a lot of its competitiveness.
Tracinda added that everyone sharing in the plan together was the only realistic hope the company has.
