How Being a Lawyer Helped Kelleher - Part One
Kelleher was asked one time if going to law school and practicing law had any value to him. He gave several answers that are extremely important - especially in the day we live.
He responded to the question saying, "I enjoyed it greatly. Going to law school and practicing law was exceedingly valuable training."
The first reason given for finding it valuable was that you "Find out what the facts are, not gossip." This is tremendously important in the age of mass communication we live in. Anybody with any type of wacky or good information can now offer it up online and have the change of it being read.
Another reason finding real facts is so important is that any industry has its own gossip mills and reliable, solid information is getting hard to come by. I've given the example before here that the worse time of my life with investing was when I was in a go-go office where I would hear the latest great opportunity about every 15 minutes. It was difficult to break through all the hype and find out what was really true.
So with Kelleher, learning the importance of looking for facts and not listening to gossip was one of the keys to helping him in the airline industry. We need to develop this skill and discipline even more now as gossip is increasingly becoming the currency of the business world, rather than facts and reality.
It may be fun to listen to gossip, but to base or build your business upon it as if it's a reality is a huge mistake. We don't have to be lawyers or trained as lawyers to develop this discipline, just asking ourselves if something seems too good to be true is enough to get rid of about 90 percent of the junk, so we can then spend our valuable time on what really has chances of succeeding.
We need to be searchers and pursuers of facts, not people who get taken in by the latest emotion-inducing "new thing" that is forever being introduced.
