Saying they wanted to show off the accomplishments of their employees, Wal-Mart (WMT) announced the amount of bonuses that their associates would be receiving this year; a huge amount equalling over a half-billion dollars. They said the reason for letting the numbers out was to honor their workers.
The company said that the individual amounts varied and wouldn't release specifics because of competition. Former managers said that bonuses in the past had been around $1,000 for full-time workers and about $500 for those working part-time.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Sarah Clark said that the company uses two factors to determine payments: if the associate's store reached their profit and sales goals for the year and whether the worker was full or part time.
Clark added that Sam Walton had started the bonus program in 1986 to offer workers a stake in the success of the company.
Michael Bergdahl, a former Wal-Mart human resources executive said that “There is so much negative media about Wal-Mart. This is just an example of how they really treat their people well and they're putting it out there to let the facts speak for themselves.” I would add that it's about time that they give out the true story that is happening overall at the company, rather than let those with spurious motives dictate the conversation.Calling the annual bonuses "My$hare," the company also said that they will start to distribute the rewards quarterly.
