The most talent-rich management bench in the world
No company leader could ever boast that they are the only reason for the overall success of the company. No great leader denies that it is the great people with them that make the company what it is.
Many times I've heard or read that General Electric (GE) may have the richest group of talented managers in the world - that's saying a lot.
What's important about that to me is that you sometimes read and hear about the demise of the management style that Jack Welch incorporated when he was at GE, and yet great managers and leaders flocked there to be under the hand of one of the master business leaders of all time.
A great business, business leader and purpose attract great people, it's not anymore complicated than that. It doesn't matter whether the business is local, regional, national or international ... people want to be part of the best around.
Most of the time when people say that his style is dead, is when they confuse the style with Welch himself. Now nobody will have the exact same personality that Welch has or the drive, but they can still have the same passion and purpose. That's what was passed on to those that gathered around Welch to learn at his feet.
Headhunters from all over search GE more than any other company for leaders. Welch and GE were incubators of great management. It just didn't happen, it was part of the culture of the company.
Talent was cultivated from the company and Welch, not simply hired. It was Welch and the great company that GE was that brought out the best in people. Those types of results will never go away with great management and purpose in a company.
