Welch's Ability to Permeate the Company
When it came to the initiatives and ideas that came about in all the various connections and contace and communications that Welch made, one of the underlying reasons they were so effective wasn't only what they were, but that he was able to get them passed on throughout an enormous organization.
In relationship to Six Sigma, this also worked as well. What he did here though was build something specifically for the introduction of the concept, as he knew something different would have to be done to ensure its success.
He instituted a training across the company which produced what were called black belts, black belts, and green belts to work in the quality techniques throughout the organization.
This was another strategy that Welch employed which was able to run the company like it was small. He continually looked for organic ways and opportunities to communicate and permeate the company with what it needed to be. The result was that the company responded - through a lot of hard work - and was able to take the initiatives and embrace them throughout the various businesses; a lot harder than it sounds.
Again, it wasn't only the concepts and strategies that made General Electric (GE) and Welch so effective, it was finding ways to take those concepts and strategies and bring them to the company in a way that they would be adopted everywhere. It was one of major reasons for the success of Welch throughout his years at the company.
