The Common Sense Management of Sam Walton - 70

Belief Versus Action

We have heard for decades the mantra of believing in what you're doing and loving it, as a way that can definitely lead to success. I have no qualms about that, but it definitely takes more than that to bring about success.

When Sam Walton knew he had a winning plan and strategy, he didn't simply sit still and do nothing. The first thing he did was to try to work with the Ben Franklin company to bring his plan of discounted stores to small, rural towns. They turned him down because they didn't think the idea of operating with lower margins would be successful.

With now big company to back him, at that time Walton decided to make it on his own.

Sam%20Walton%20was%20a%20doer.jpgThe actions he took shows the belief he had in what he was doing. The first thing he did was take out a loan against everything he owned so that he could open up his first store in Rogers, Arkansas, a town close to Bentonville.

That one action put everything that Walton had on the line. To do that you have to believe in what you're doing. All the talk in the world has no meaning until you take the actions to back up that talk.

What all of this means is that if you talk without ever taking action, in reality, you don't believe in what it is you're seeing. True belief will bring real action. It's the same in any type of business management or leadership position; as well as you people.

A secret to knowing yourself in this area, but even as importantly - knowing the true believers in your company or department is to forget about how you feel about them, and watch what they do. What someone does is the bottom line decider of what they believe in. If they believe in the company, they'll show it through their actions. A simple but powerful and accurate measurement tool for ourselves and our people.
