Study and Question the Management of the Business
Sam Walton was asked one time on whether there could ever be another Wal-Mart (WMT) type story that could happen in the business world again. His answer was not only was there a great chance, but that there were probably hundreds or thousands of chances.
He said it like this:
"Could a Wal-Mart-type story still occur in this day and age? My answer is of course it could happen again. Somewhere out there right now there's someone - probably hundreds of thousands of someones - with good enough ideas to go it all the way. It will be done again, over and over, providing that someone wants it badly enough to do what it takes to get there. It's all a matter of attitude and the capacity to constantly study and question the management of the business."
The thing I want to mention quick is the "capacity to constantly study and question the management of the business." The first thing is capacity. You've got to be able to enlarge yourself or be enlarged to handle a great, growing business. That's the first thing.
Second is equally important, and that is the study and endless questioning if the business is being run in the most efficient way. That's what he meant when he said "question" management. He wasn't referring to people as managers here, but the way management was executing the purpose of the business, and if it was done to the fullness that could be done.
Walton was always going over things again and again, sometimes to the dismay of his peers, as he continuously looked for better ways to do things. Both of these are equally important to the success of any great enterprise.
