He Likes the Challenge of Surprises
Last post we talked about Branson's over-intrusiveness at times, but there's another side of him that many of his managers say more than make up for those moments.
One manager said that one of the key things that set him apart from other CEOs is that he has no problem with being presented with surprises. He adds that Branson actually thrives on the challenge of them.
Startup problems don't bother him at all. Neither do unforeseen battles. "It's refreshing to work for somebody who wants to say yes instead of always wanting to say no," said another manager.
He is likened to a kid with a chemistry set whose continually mixing up all sorts of ingredients to see what will happen next. Obviously he sets his company up the way his life is really lived, and those that want to live that way love to work with and for him.
So when those times come when he does interfere a little too much, people don't mind at all that he does, as not too long afterwords he's busy finding some other project he can goof around with and bring them into the process.
It's one of those jobs that people working for Branson find themselves not knowing at times, hour to hour what will be happening next. Branson not only does this for his enjoyment, or because it's the way he is, he does it because he wants his people to experience life and business the way he is. So he tries to say yes to unique and surprising things at any time he's able to. Those working with him love him for it.
