Richard Branson - Lessons in Business, Management and Life - 67

He Can Work From Anywhere and Keep His Focus

On the surface, you could look at the comment above and say, "big deal," how could that be of any competitive advantage. On the contrary, in many ways it is.

But first of all, you have to realize that this is the life that Branson wants to live. So part of the value is simply in doing what it is he wants to do with his life.

Beyond that and taking the island he owns as an example, he does a ton of work there when he may be lying in a hammock or walking in the ocean while talking on the phone. Remember that Branson considers work or relaxation as all part of life; necker%20island.jpgnot an either/or scenario.

So when he may be on Necker Island, it's no big deal to do work for five hours in the morning and play some, than go back to do several hours of work later in the evening. The point being that work wasn't only connected to others away from the island, rather he many times had people right there with him doing the same things he was doing while making deals.

He was offering to them what they would consider a perk, while he would simply think of it as another day in his life.

So what value is all of this? He didn't need a specific environment to be able to flourish or do his business in. He was able to adapt to all environments he found himself in, and not take his focus off of what was of importance at the time.

If you don't think this is hard to do, try it in various environments and see how you do. For those not able to do this - which is most - it's definitely an advantage to be able to move around in any environment without suffering from a lack of focus or familiarity. Branson is one of the best at doing this.
