Branson's Career Feeds His Passions, Holds His Interest, Incorporates His Family, Allows For His Quirks

Last post on Branson we talked about the greatest accomplishment for Branson was in creating the type of life he did for himself.

I wanted to talk a little bit more about that in detail. Look at some of the things mentioned above. First of all, feeding his passions. He just loves to take the Virgin label and either start or take over a business and make it into what it represents. That's one of the key passions of his life. He gets to feed that passion through what he does.

Remember what Branson has said in that he considers life as a whole; whether he's at work or play - he considers it all living. The business gives him the resources to life the life he wants.

Some people don't understand Branson's strategy, as they think it's all over the board and there's no reason for any of it. From one perspective that's true. But with Branson, he's the type that has interests all over the map. He couldn't be happy with focusing on only one business and making it grow. The variety under the Virgin umbrella helps keep his interest high.

Next the business hasn't taken away from his family life. He is around his family all the time as he goes about doing his business. Again, something hard to understand for some, as most keep a clear line between the two. I'm not talking about them being there when he's right at the table negotiating or talking. But he will take them many times with him as he goes about doing his business. When he's done he just continues on by being with them.

Last, concerning his seemingly endless quirks, Virgin is the perfect vehicle to give him opportunity to exercise all of them. He can spread all across his empire without necessarily making them have an effect upon any one business. It simply allows him to be who he is.

I like this because I think within any business culture this can be done, depending on the purpose and culture of a company. Obviously Branson wouldn't fit in with certain types of companies, but neither would other types fit into his.

It's the creation of a great business and culture that looks for certain types of employees and leaders that Branson helps give us insight into. With Branson being who he is and everybody knowing it, it will help attract those with similar values and dispositions that help the company to continue be what it is. The two can never really be separated.
