Branson is a billionaire with a mission

Anybody that has followed Richard Branson through the years, knows that he's gone through some type of change recently. It's not so much that he's necessarily changed himself, he's still going after things like he did when he was younger, but it's more what he's going after that's changed.

Before it seems that he simply did things for the challenge and fun; and that's still true today. But the substance of what he's being challenged with and having fun over is changing in some ways. That's part of the Virgin Galactic mission he's given himself to. He's also started to get himself hooked up with alternative energy and other such projects.

Richard%20Branson%20on%20a%20Mission.jpgThis seems to be something many people that start getting into this age bracket start to think about: leaving their legacy. That seems to be what Branson is considering as he gets involved in these new areas. He wants to be remembered for being more than a billionaire playboy. At least his latest actions seem to dictate that.

This doesn't mean that anything else is changing though, as he milks all of this to continually market the Virgin brand and name, while opening up typical companies he has in the past like his recent Virgin Comics venture (which just shows you that some things never change).

Still it's something to consider as managers and we start to look at what we want to leave behind. The time usally comes when self-assesment sets in, and we start to look at things that we think of as more important.

Like Branson, I think that we can look at doing something that seems like a great mission, but still keeps the core principles we live by. Branson seems to be doing that in this season of his life.
