'Make me feel important!'
Mary Kay had a powerful but simple philosophy when it came to dealing with people, she said: "I have learned to imagine an invisible sign around each person’s neck that says, 'Make me feel important!' I respond to it immediately, and I never cease to be amazed at how positively people react."
It's amazing what the power of a thought or idea can bring about. She basically turned that thought into what is today a company that sells over $2 billion worth of products a year.
She also followed up the above statement by saying "If I were to teach a first-year management course, I would instruct every student to wear a make-me-feel-important sign for the entire semester.
"By the end of the term and for the rest of their lives, they’d imagine seeing the same sign hanging from the neck of everyone they met. What wonderful relationships they would build with their spouses, friends, co-workers and customers!"
What I like about this is how she thought of customers as someone she would have a wonderful relationship with. There isn't a negative thought about people she wanted to help make feel important.
Again, the thing I'm emphasizing in all of this is how an idea like that, when applied to the business world - or anywhere for that matter - can become a flourishing, living dynamic that can bring a person and company all the success in the world they ever wanted. Ideas that are genuine and real, plus really practically lived out, can't be stopped or kept from reaching the destination they're headed toward.
All of this from Mary Kay looking at people and understanding that they are saying "Make me feel important!"
