"We need leaders who follow a moral compass that points in the right direction regardless of the trends."
Considering the comment the Mary Kay said above, she definitely lived what she spoke. Even to this day, many people that were her detractors speak things about her that they not only disagree with, but slam extremely hard. It didn't matter to her.
This is one of the continuing problems we have today in business and business leadership. When many leaders see what others are doing, they don't take their moral bearings and make decisions based upon doing what is right, instead they follow the herd and hope that they aren't the ones that are singled out and caught. Think of backdating stock options as a recent example.
Another side effect of this is it also leads to the herd mentality in trends as far as products or services go. You no more hear about a company releasing a new product and a couple of days later their closest competitor has copied it and made a similar announcement in a race to show that there is no differentiation between the two. Stupid at the minimum.
In reference to a moral compass though, we do need a new way of looking at integrity again, no matter what the winds of temptation are dictating to us.
While I'm not one that believes the overall world of business is corrupt, there are enough questionable things being done that causes harm to all of us; especially looked for by those that hate business and the free market system.
Like someone said one time, "would you do what you're doing if it was put on the front page of every newspaper in the country?" If you can't answer yes, it probably shouldn't be done.
Whatever the values that our companies and we have, we must remain true to them no matter what the cost, or eventually it may end up costing you everything. Follow your moral compass no matter what anyone else does. You'll never regret it!
