The greatest pollution problem we face today is negativity
Mary Kay Ash had a seemingly endless amount of postive enthusiasm. She didn't seem to let anything get in her way of getting what she wanted done.
In addition to saying that "The greatest pollution problem we face today is negativity," she also added that in response we must "Eliminate the negative attitude and believe you can do anything. Replace 'if I can, I hope, maybe' with 'I can, I will, I must.'"
I
tend to think of negativity as deconstructive criticism rather than contructive. Being positive means that we can find a way; we can solve the problem or challenge ahead of us. No matter what it takes we can do it!
Most of us reading here know that. I think the thing we also need to embrace is the openness that throwing ideas around to one another creates.
Sometimes real feedback can be thrown out because it's considered negative, rather than understanding that it's looking at things from all angles. So in our desire to maintain a positive attitude and workplace, let's not forget that it isn't negative to receive and give feedback, it's only negative to goes against something because we can't see how to get there or don't want to change. That's what Mary Kay was saying when she said to replace 'if I can, I hope, maybe' with 'I can, I will, I must.'"
From there is where feedback needs to begin. Understanding that and setting those parameters can be a great way to receive all the wisdom and insight that our people have.
