"Many women have made the mistake of changing their beliefs to accommodate their work."
There are a lot of times in the media when we hear that someone has sold out. What is usually meant by that is their core beliefs have been compromised to bring more success. This is always a mistake; whether you're a man or a woman.
It may be a mystery that may never be solved, but when a person has certain beliefs, you can be sure that they will be tested in whatever you endeavor to do. It's just a part of life.
So when you commit to who you are and what you believe in, it's important to stick to it.
Even though there are times when there seems to be no connection, those who remain true to who they are, usually are the ones to succeed, even when they may be on opposite sides of their respective value systems.
This is what being genuine is all about. A number of times we will wonder how even scoundrels can make at times in the world, and the answer is that they're true to what they are. Nobody expects anything else of them. So when they act in character, it doesn't surprise anyone.
On the other hand, when someone that isn't a scoundrel tries to act like one to accomodate the circumstances, it rarely ever works, and the personal costs can be great.
I'm not advocating being a scoundrel, what I'm saying is that is certain businesses and occupations - parts of the music industry as an example - you can do certain things and get away with it as far as the fans go. Try that same thing in another are and it can completely backfire.
Selling out has to do with what you truly, deeply believe in. That should never be changed so that you can advance or become better positioned at work. Stay true to your beliefs and you'll be surprised at the doors that truly will open, even if it makes it harder in the short term.
