Her Dream Wasn't an Illusion
When Mary Kay talked about her company and the dream she had of creating opportunities for women, it wasn't an illusion that would happen for any woman that simply signed on. She knew what it would take to reach success.
Here's the way she said it: "I envisioned a company in which any woman could become just as successful as she wanted to be. The doors would be wide open to opportunity for women who were willing to pay the price and had the courage to dream."
A number of people has said a lot of negative things about her company, but I think that they need to understand the statement that Mary Kay said above, concerning that women who would succeed had to be willing to pay the price and
have enough courage to dream the dream.
No matter what any of us do, if there isn't the willingness to pay the price, there will never be success. It doesn't matter what the thing is that we say we want to accomplish.
Right before she made the quote above, she also said concerning starting Mary Kay that "We didn't set the world on fire from the first day: disappointments, setbacks and work have created the Company as it is today."
In other words, it's the story that all people that are trying to accomplish something must go through to get there. The companies and leaders that make it will go through those same disappointments and setbacks that Mary Kay and her people went through.
It's how we respond to them that will make us and the company who we are and what it is. She knew that encouragement is only hype if it isn't coupled with sticking with it, adapting and hard work. She never had that illusion.
