What Type of People We Need
When looking for great people to work in our companies, sometimes we can look at some of the wrong areas to make the determination on what it is we want within them to enhance the company.
Mary Kay said one time concerning successful people that "The definition of successful people is simply ordinary people with extraordinary determination. You cannot keep determined people from success. If you place stumbling blocks in their way, they will use them for stepping-stones and climb to new heights. People who succeed have a goal, a dream and make their plans and follow them."
I like this. Many times we can look at a lot of outward things that seem to be the determining factors in who we want to work in our companies. But looking for those things within, to me, are far more important than those outward things that anybody could have.
Another quality I like in what she observed was that successful people were ordinary people. That's really true. What makes ordinary people seem so extraordinary isn't that they are better than anybody else, like Mary Kay said, rather it's the determination to accomplish what they want that makes them who they are.
The other simple, but important principles she added when she said people succeed who have goal, a dream and make their plans and follow them, applies to the workplace as well.
To me we should know our people to the point of understanding what these are as far as they relate to the company. Sure they'll have private goals they want to reach, but usually those are reached through the work they perform which offers them the opportunity to do them.
But what I mean is we should know within the company where they want to go and what they are willing to exchange in order to get there. We should be highly aware of the ambitions that our people have so we can give them every opportunity to reach them. This should be encouraged, not discouraged.
The underlying importance of this is determination is the foundation that sets all of this up. The most determined people within our companies should be the most valuable as well. From the beginning of our hiring processes all the way throughout an individual's time with the company, we should look for those with high levels of determination. They will be among the best people we have.
