Management and its Reflection of You
One of the unique things about great managers and business leaders, including Buffett, is that they are always most effective when their management philosophy and style lines up with them personally.
This doesn't take away from the purpose of the existence of the company, but rather, within that context, it reinforces and enhances it.
With Buffett, he looks at the world from a certain view. That view is what drives who he is and how he operates. He couldn't be anything than what he is. Many businesses make huge mistakes misunderstanding the difference between personal makeup and the vision of the business. It can be interpreted as a detriment, rather than a value to the business over the long-term.
One of the things that can be done is to ensure that management is in line with the values of the company. It's a big mistake to hire someone to lead that has to be convinced of the unique business purpose the company represents. It'll never work. The fiasco surrounding Wal-Mart (WMT) and Julie Roehm is a recent example.
Management isn't something that can be disconnected from an individual's personal approach to life and the world.
It's really pretty simple. We need to understand the mission of the company, know who we really are, and manage according to those realities.
If we're looking for leadership in our companies, this is a simple test to start off and base the process on. It's one of the reasons that Buffett has had very little problems with the management under the Berkshire (BRK-A) banner.
